An opportunity map for the North Sea
A North Sea opportunity map will show where – and how – nature enhancement activities can best be carried out in the North Sea. Consider measures such as restoring habitats for fish, shellfish or seabirds. With such a map, plans for nature restoration can be executed more precisely and effectively, preventing efforts from being fragmented.
The research
The goal of this project is to develop an opportunity map that concretely and systematically supports nature restoration in the North Sea. The research consists of two pillars: extensive literature research and conversations with permit issuers, competent authorities and experts. The process will progress in five phases:
-
Action plan
Expectations will be discussed and legal and ecological considerations will be mapped. The map’s level of detail, and which parties should be involved, will also be determined. -
Source analysis
Existing literature will be collected and linked to specific areas in the North Sea. This will inventory the restoration measures that are possible for each species or habitat. -
Conversations with experts
With the help of a questionnaire, knowledge will be gathered about legal, ecological or practical limitations. This will provide valuable input for further development. -
Opportunity map concept
Based on literature and expert input, an initial concept for the opportunity map will be created, including a GIS display. The final form will depend upon available and supplementary information. -
Results and final report
Outcomes will be discussed with the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat). The final report will then be delivered, and will contain the opportunity map and recommendations for use.
Partners
Arcadis will carry out the research, commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, and with funding from Nature Regeneration North Sea.
